The Clash
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Clash is the British punk band's debut album, released on 8 April 1977 on CBS. The songs were largely written on the eighteenth floor of a tower block on Harrow Road in London, in a flat rented by Mick Jones's grandmother. Recording took three weeks in February 1977 and cost four thousand pounds. Mickey Foote, the group's sound engineer, produced. Drummer Terry Chimes played only on this album.
Joe Strummer and Jones wrote almost all the songs. Janie Jones is about a well-known London brothel keeper. Career Opportunities is about the lack of work. White Riot is short and intense, with a two-chord chorus, and is about class and race. Police and Thieves is a reggae cover. The album is musically varied for a punk band and reached number twelve in Great Britain. Later it appeared in many lists of the best punk albums.
