Give ’Em Enough Rope
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Give ’Em Enough Rope is the second studio album by the Clash, released on 10 November 1978 by CBS. It was the band's first album in the United States and the first with drummer Topper Headon. Sandy Pearlman produced. Joe Strummer played most of it on a rented Gibson ES-345, because his Telecaster was in for repair, and Pearlman mixed the drums louder than Strummer's vocals.
The lyrics deal with current topics. Tommy Gun is about aircraft hijackings, Julie's Been Working for the Drug Squad about the police action Operation Julie against an LSD ring in Wales, and Safe European Home about an uncomfortable trip by Strummer and Mick Jones to Jamaica. The album reached number 2 on the UK chart. Greil Marcus called it in Rolling Stone straightforward English punk with a grip on the future, and Sounds declared it record of the year.
