Sandinista!

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Sandinista! was released on 12 December 1980 and was a triple album with 36 tracks. Recording took almost the whole year and took place in London, Manchester, Jamaica and New York. The band largely produced the record itself, with Bill Price as recording engineer. To be able to sell the album cheaply, the band gave up royalties on the first 200,000 copies sold in Great Britain.

The Clash went beyond punk and reggae and took in dub, rhythm and blues, calypso, gospel, jazz and rap. The influence of Lee Scratch Perry can be heard in the echoing, full sound. Washington Bullets is Joe Strummer's most outspoken political lyric up to that point. It is the only record on which all four members sing. Critics were at first critical of its size, but the record was later seen as an influential experiment.
