I Just Can’t Stop It

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

I Just Can’t Stop It is the debut album by The Beat, an English Two-Tone band from Birmingham. It was released on 23 May 1980 on Go-Feet Records. In the United States it came out on Sire under the name The English Beat, with Tears of a Clown and Ranking Full Stop added, two songs that had been released in 1979 as a double A-side on 2 Tone. Bob Sargeant produced the record. The girl on the sleeve, the Beat Girl, was drawn by the cartoonist Hunt Emerson.

The band played with singer Dave Wakeling, toaster Ranking Roger and saxophonist Saxa. Rolling Stone found the music wild and menacing, sexy and sharp. At the end of 1980 the album ranked high in the year-end lists of NME, Sounds and OOR. Simon Reynolds counts it among the five most important albums of the Two-Tone and ska revival. Mirror in the Bathroom and Twist & Crawl are still highly regarded.
