Surfer Girl

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Surfer Girl was released on 16 September 1963 on Capitol Records, after Surfin' U.S.A. had made the group one of the biggest in America. That success gave Brian Wilson the room to do the production himself, something that was not yet done in the music industry. He worked from May to July at Western Studio in Hollywood. Al Jardine, who had earlier been replaced, returned to the band during the recording.

The album consists largely of surf songs. For the first time strings are heard, in The Surfer Moon, and session musicians of the Wrecking Crew play, in Hawaii and Our Car Club. Wilson called Catch a Wave his first major vocal arrangement. The AllMusic reviewer singled out In My Room as the most important song. A music historian saw in the record a step forward in Wilson's growth as a composer and producer.

Listening tip. Listen to In My Room and notice how soft and personal this song sounds beside the surf songs around it.
