Little Deuce Coupe

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Little Deuce Coupe was released on 7 October 1963 on Capitol Records, three weeks after Surfer Girl. It is the Beach Boys' fourth album and the first whose title has nothing to do with surfing. The theme is hot rods and cars, which is why it counts as one of the first rock concept albums. Four songs had already appeared on earlier records. The eight new songs were recorded in a hurry, but Brian Wilson's arrangements became more and more complicated, especially in No-Go Showboat and Custom Machine. It was the last record with guitarist David Marks until 2012.

The title refers to a 1932 Ford Coupe, for many enthusiasts the ultimate hot rod. The photo on the cover came from Hot Rod magazine and shows the car of its owner, Clarence Catallo. Be True to Your School was re-recorded for a single and became a hit again.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to No-Go Showboat and notice the harmonies. Hear how layered the arrangement is compared with a simple car song.
