Zeit
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Zeit was released in August 1972 on the German label Ohr as a double album, the third by Tangerine Dream. It was the first record with Peter Baumann, alongside Christopher Franke and Edgar Froese. The subtitle is Largo in Four Movements. Florian Fricke of Popol Vuh plays Moog synthesizer, and four cellists open the first piece. The cover shows a solar eclipse. The music fits the idea behind the title: time in fact stands still and exists only in our heads.
The sound is slower and more atmospheric than on earlier records. One theme literally melts into the next, almost like classical music. Critics often call Zeit one of the first examples of dark ambient. One review spoke of a monolithic and sombre album, the group's most difficult. Steven Wilson names it his favourite album of all time and the birth of ambient.
