Handsworth Revolution

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Handsworth Revolution is the debut album by Steel Pulse, named after the district of Handsworth in Birmingham, where the band comes from and to which the record is dedicated. It was released in 1978 on Island Records, after the first single Ku Klux Klan, a call to resist racism. Producer Karl Pitterson had previously worked with Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh.

The album received glowing reviews and ten days after its release stood at number 9 on the British chart. In the summer of 1978 the group played as the support act for Bob Marley and the Wailers in Europe and learned stage discipline there. At a Rock Against Racism performance in Victoria Park, more than 80,000 people watched. The singles Prodigal Son and Prediction also came from the album. Mykaell Riley left the band afterwards.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Ku Klux Klan and notice the message of resistance in the lyrics and how it is delivered over a reggae rhythm.
