Rock ’n Soul
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Rock ’n Soul · Rock 'n Soul is a studio album by Solomon Burke from 1964, released on Atlantic Records. The title refers to the nickname King of Rock 'n' Soul, which he liked to bear. According to him, there was no rock without soul and no soul without rock. The rhythm and blues label went against him, because he led a clean life and was deeply religious. His coronation as king at the Royal Theatre in Baltimore was reported in Jet in January 1964.
The album features seven hits from the Billboard Top 100, including Just Out of Reach, Cry to Me, Can't Nobody Love You, If You Need Me and Goodbye Baby (Baby Goodbye). The New Rolling Stone Album Guide called his version of He'll Have to Go a heart-rending interpretation. Cry to Me has, according to AllMusic, a light Caribbean rhythm at a cheerful tempo, while the lyrics are in fact solemn. The record appears in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
