Deep in My Soul
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Deep in My Soul was released in 1977 and was Smokey Robinson's fifth solo album. Berry Gordy was executive producer. The album contains eight songs, almost all by other writers. That was new for a singer who had built his fame on his own songs for the Miracles.
According to the source, various Motown writers try here to approximate the clear, direct style of the younger Robinson. According to the reviewer Robert Christgau, they succeed on four songs, two of which open each side of the record. Robinson then sings them as if he had written them himself. The Los Angeles Times found his singing excellent, but also felt that he needed strong melodies of his own to recapture the sheen of the Miracles. The album thus shows how dependent Robinson was on good material.
