Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake · Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake was released on 24 May 1968 and was the third album by Small Faces, their only concept album. It spent six weeks at number 1 in England. The recording took about five months, mainly at Olympic Studios in Barnes. The title and packaging parodied a brand of tobacco in a tin, and the first edition came in a round metal tin which soon proved too expensive.

The first side shows all kinds of styles, from Cockney singalongs such as Lazy Sunday to the soul ballad Afterglow. The second side tells a fairy tale about Happiness Stan, who searches for the missing half of the moon. Comedian Stanley Unwin links the six songs with his nonsense language Unwinese. The idea arose during a boat trip on the Thames after a failed tour of Australia and New Zealand. Because of its complexity, the band never played the album live in its entirety.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Happiness Stan and notice the voice of Stanley Unwin between the songs. Can you hear his invented language as a narrator in a fairy tale?
