Gospel Train

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Sister Rosetta Tharpe recorded Gospel Train in July 1956 and released it in December of that year. She was already one of the most successful pioneers of gospel and one of the first to blend gospel with rhythm and blues. Here she is accompanied by musicians from the New York jazz scene, and on several songs the gospel quartet the Harmonizing Four sing along.

The music is firmly rooted in traditional Black gospel, with the occasional touch of blues. The record shows a change of style and points ahead to her influence on blues and blues rock in the 1960s. A reviewer in 2023 heard powerful singing and a fine guitar solo in Can't No Grave Hold Me Down. The album is regarded as a high point in her work. AllMusic called it a super collection, and Tom Moon included it in 1,000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die.
