Bridge Over Troubled Water
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Bridge Over Troubled Water · After the soundtrack for The Graduate and the successful Bookends, Art Garfunkel took a part in the film Catch-22. Filming lasted about eight months, and the partnership came under strain. Paul Simon meanwhile wrote the songs. With producer Roy Halee, the duo sought a new sound, away from ordinary folk rock, with influences from rock, gospel, jazz and world music. For the first time the accompanying session musicians were given credit, among them Hal Blaine, Joe Osborn and Larry Knechtel.
Simon wanted a gospel piano sound for the title song and brought in Knechtel for it. Garfunkel thought the song was too short, after which a third verse was added. The Boxer is also among the best-known songs. The first reviews were mixed, but later the album was praised. It won six Grammys, including Album of the Year. Shortly afterwards the two split up.
