Abraxas

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Abraxas is Santana's second studio album and was released on 23 September 1970 on Columbia Records. It became the band's first album to top the American Billboard 200. The title comes from the book Demian by Hermann Hesse, from which a quotation appears on the back of the sleeve. The cover itself shows the painting Annunciation by Mati Klarwein, which Carlos Santana saw in a magazine.

The band plays a mixture of rock and Latin rhythms. Black Magic Woman is a version of a song by Fleetwood Mac, to which Gypsy Queen by Gábor Szabó has been added. Oye Como Va was a hit for Tito Puente in the early sixties and was played live because the audience could dance to it so well. Samba Pa Ti is an instrumental. In 2015 the Library of Congress added the album to the National Recording Registry.
