From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Cool Voice of Rita Reys · The Cool Voice of Rita Reys is the debut album of the Dutch jazz singer Rita Reys. It was released on the Dutch Philips and the American Columbia. The recordings are divided over the two sides of the LP. On one side a group led by her husband, drummer Wessel Ilcken, plays, recorded between 1955 and 1956 at the Phonogram Studios in Hilversum. On the other side a band around drummer Art Blakey plays, recorded in New York in May and June 1956, including Horace Silver and Hank Mobley.
The repertoire consists of standards, from My Funny Valentine to That Old Black Magic. Reys spent several months in the United States in 1956 and 1957 and sang there with many musicians. AllMusic calls this probably her most famous record.
