Goin' Latin

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Goin' Latin is a studio album by pianist Ramsey Lewis featuring Latin American percussion and styles. Cadet Records released it in 1967. The record reached number 2 on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart and number 16 on the Billboard Soul Albums chart.

The programme includes Hey, Mrs. Jones, Summer Samba, Lara's Theme from Doctor Zhivago and Cast Your Fate to the Wind by Vince Guaraldi, alongside original pieces by the arranger Richard Evans such as Blue Bongo. Thom Jurek of AllMusic praised Evans's arrangements and the soulful, bass-heavy sound. In his view this suits the album's fondness for bossa nova, discotheque boogaloo and a light form of Latin soul.

Listening

Listening tip. In Summer Samba, listen to the piano and notice how the Latin percussion colours the rhythm.
