Trios / Solos was made in two days in November 1972 and released in June 1973 on ECM. Manfred Eicher produced it. Guitarist Ralph Towner plays here together with bassist Glen Moore. Tabla player Collin Walcott and oboist Paul McCandless take part as guests.

Towner plays twelve-string guitar, classical guitar and piano. The title says what you hear: changing line-ups, from solo pieces to trios with bass and an additional instrument. In this way the guitar, the bass, the tabla and the oboe sound different together every time. The AllMusic reviewer gave the album four stars. He found some pieces a little aimless, but praised the way the four sounds touch and inspire one another.
