Batik
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Ralph Towner recorded Batik in January 1978 and released it on ECM in September of that year. The album is a trio recording: Towner plays twelve-string guitar, classical guitar and piano, with Eddie Gómez on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums. He wrote all five pieces himself.
The longest composition is the title track, which lasts well over sixteen minutes. According to the reviewer Scott Yanow of AllMusic, the music unfolds slowly but logically. Towner's sound is quiet, but there is a great deal of inner heat in it. Yanow considers the album worth listening to closely, at high volume.
Listening
Listening tip. In Batik, listen to how guitar, bass and drums give each other room as the piece develops over more than sixteen minutes. Notice what changes and what stays the same.
