Rage Against the Machine

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Rage Against the Machine · The debut was released on 6 November 1992 on Epic Records and rests largely on the group's first demo tape, completed eleven months earlier. Seven of the ten songs were already on that tape. The cover shows the photograph of the Vietnamese monk Thích Quảng Đức, who burned himself to death in 1963. All the songs carry a political message. The sleeve notes state that no samples, keyboards or synthesizers were used.

The sound blends driving rock with mostly rapped vocals. Zack de la Rocha shares the spotlight with guitarist Tom Morello, who combines metal, blues rock and jazz and sometimes imitates the sound of a scratching DJ. Critics praised the convincing vocals and the political intent. One reviewer called it the first album to bring rap and heavy metal together successfully. Know Your Enemy and Wake Up were singled out as highlights. Rolling Stone ranks the album among the best metal records of all time.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Know Your Enemy and notice how the rapped vocals and the guitar keep giving each other room.
