Yo! Bum Rush the Show

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Yo! Bum Rush the Show is Public Enemy's debut album and was released in March 1987 on Def Jam Recordings. It was recorded at Spectrum City Studios in Hempstead, New York. The record brought together the sample-rich production of the Bomb Squad and the scratching of DJ Terminator X with the black nationalist politics of the rapper Chuck D. As a result it was not well received everywhere by radio and critics.

The music is bare and confrontational: a pounding pulse, hard drums and a high electronic tone, without melody. Most radio programmers ignored the album, but it still became one of the fastest-selling hip hop records. The singles were Public Enemy No. 1 and You're Gonna Get Yours. In the British press it scored high: NME called it the best record of 1987. Later it is regarded as one of the most influential hip hop albums.
