Apocalypse 91… The Enemy Strikes Black

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Apocalypse 91… The Enemy Strikes Black · For their fourth album Public Enemy chose a new direction partly out of necessity. According to Hank Shocklee, the discs containing almost all the tracks from four or five years had been stolen, so the group had to re-record in a hurry. The sound therefore became leaner than on earlier records, and live musicians played a bigger role. The album was released in 1991 on Def Jam.

On 1 Million Bottlebags the group protests against the spread of malt liquor in the African-American community. With the metal band Anthrax they made a thrash version of Bring the Noise. The controversial video for By the Time I Get to Arizona showed the murder of Governor Evan Mecham. Can't Truss It became the most successful single. Critics praised the record, and in The Village Voice's Pazz & Jop poll it came in at number 2.

Listening tip. Listen to Bring The Noise and notice how the metal band Anthrax and the group's rap together make a single track.
