For You
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
For You is Prince's debut album, released by Warner Bros. on 7 April 1978. He wrote, arranged, produced and played everything himself. In September 1977 he began in Minneapolis, after which the project moved to the Record Plant in Sausalito. Producer Tommy Vicari was formally credited, but he was given little say. For the opening track, 46 vocal parts were layered on top of one another.
The album cost three times the original budget, and afterwards he called himself a physical wreck. The lead single Soft and Wet reached number 12 on the soul chart. Robert Christgau found it a lot of skill and little challenge, but appreciated Baby and Soft and Wet. Of his falsetto he wrote that it surpassed Stevie Wonder's.
