Legalize It

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Legalize It is Peter Tosh's debut as a solo artist, after his time with the Wailers. The album was released in June 1976 and was recorded at Treasure Isle and Randy's in Kingston. In the same year Bunny Wailer and Bob Marley, with his new Wailers, also released a record.

The title song was written as a reaction to the persecution Tosh suffered from the Jamaican police, and as a political plea to legalise cannabis, above all for medical use. When the song came out in Jamaica in 1975 it was banned, but that attempt to smother it failed and made Tosh internationally known. In the United States the album reached the Billboard 200 and later went platinum. Robert Christgau felt that he had collected about half a record's worth of good songs, and missed the light touch of his old mates.
