Pipes of Peace

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Pipes of Peace was meant to be a twin to Tug of War from 1982, again with producer George Martin. Paul McCartney recorded it sporadically between December 1980 and August 1983. In November 1982 the recording stopped when he began work on the film Give My Regards to Broad Street. Four tracks date from the Tug of War sessions. The two collaborations with Michael Jackson, Say Say Say and The Man, were recorded in May 1981.

The album sounds more electronic than its predecessor. He wrote the title song after being asked for a song about an optimistic future for children. It became a British number 1, and Say Say Say topped the chart in seven countries. The album did less well than Tug of War and critics often called it safe.
