The Ultimate Sin

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

After a stay in rehab at the Betty Ford Center, the singer was presented in 1985 with a lot of music by guitarist Jake E. Lee. This time Lee demanded a contract with his writing credits before he delivered anything, because he had been sidelined on the previous album. Bob Daisley wrote the lyrics for the most part, but no longer played. Phil Soussan took over on bass, Randy Castillo came in behind the drums, and Ron Nevison produced. The working title was Killer of Giants, but at the last moment it became The Ultimate Sin.

Shot in the Dark became the hit single. Soussan co-wrote it, and the song was originally by his previous band Wildlife. The album went platinum in 1986 and was his best-charting studio record up to that point. Even so, he calls it his least favourite solo album: he found Nevison's production unimaginative.
