Aquemini
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Aquemini is OutKast's third album, released in 1998 by LaFace and Arista. The title combines the star signs of the two rappers: Big Boi is Aquarius, André 3000 Gemini. That difference in character runs through the record as a theme. After the success of ATLiens, the duo were given more money and freedom. The recording took place mostly in Atlanta, at Bobby Brown's Bosstown Recording Studios and Doppler Studios. They lived in the studio for weeks, produced most of it themselves and let session musicians drift in and out. Many songs grew out of jam sessions.
The sound has live instruments and influences of 1970s funk, southern soul, gospel, country and psychedelic rock. Guests include Raekwon, George Clinton and Erykah Badu. Critics were very enthusiastic about the musicianship and the idiosyncratic themes. The album went platinum in two months and is regarded as one of the best hip hop albums ever.
