Ko Sira

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Ko Sira is a 1993 album by the Malian Wassoulou singer Oumou Sangaré. It was first released independently under the title Bi Furu. The record was made in Berlin and produced by Nick Gold and Massambou Welle Diallo. She wrote the songs herself, and like much of her work the album deals with feminist themes. The title refers to the marriage of today. Sigi Kuruni is about the possibility of domestic violence in a new marriage.

Critics praised her high, soulful singing above a mixture of Western guitar, bass and violin with African percussion and call-and-response vocals. In Europe the album was a commercial success and stayed for months in the world music charts.

Listening

Listening tip. In Sigi Kuruni, listen to the high vocals and the two backing singers who answer them.
