Angels Fall First

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Tuomas Holopainen wrote the music for this album during his military service in the Finnish army. The idea for a band came in August 1996 around a campfire at his summer cottage. Acoustic soon proved too dull, and the group chose a heavier direction. Angels Fall First was actually intended as a demo for record labels, but Spinefarm thought it was perfect and released it unchanged. On 30 September 1997 a limited edition of five hundred copies was released, and on 1 November the regular release followed with four extra tracks.

It is power metal with gothic, folk and classical elements. Tarja Turunen sings, and Holopainen himself sings the male parts on Beauty and the Beast, The Carpenter and Astral Romance. After that he never sang on an album again, because he did not think he was good enough. He now sees the record more or less as an extended demo.
