The Marble Index

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Marble Index is the second album by the German singer Nico, released in November 1968 by Elektra Records. After the folk pop debut Chelsea Girl, she wanted to be taken seriously as an artist and no longer be seen as a former model. Jac Holzman gave her a budget of 10,000 dollars and four days of recording time in Los Angeles. Frazier Mohawk was the producer, but John Cale was given a free hand. He built his arrangements, inspired by modern European classical music, around her harmonium and her sombre voice. The title comes from The Prelude by William Wordsworth.

The album barely registered on release, but gained much appreciation over the years. It sounds bare and cold, and is regarded as a forerunner of the gothic rock of the 1980s.

Listening

Listening tip. In Ari's Song, dedicated to her little son, listen to the harmonium and the vocals: how comforting does this lullaby sound?
