Five Leaves Left
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Five Leaves Left is Nick Drake's debut album. It was recorded between May 1968 and April 1969 at Sound Techniques in London and was released in 1969 on Island Records. Sound engineer John Wood later said that Drake recorded live, singing and playing alongside the string ensemble, without overdubs. The title refers to Rizla rolling papers, whose packets announced near the end that only five were left.
Richard Thompson of Fairport Convention and Danny Thompson of Pentangle, among others, played on the album. Robert Kirby, a friend from Cambridge, wrote the string arrangements for several songs, Harry Robinson for River Man. The sound is described as folk with a chamber music side: soft vocals, quiet guitar playing and wistful lyrics. The first reviews were mixed. Drake sold few records during his lifetime, but at the end of the 1980s more attention came, and later the album often appeared on lists of the best records of all time.
