Bryter Layter
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Bryter Layter is Nick Drake's second studio album and was released on 5 March 1971 on Island Records. Like his debut Five Leaves Left, it contains no songs for just guitar and voice. Drake was accompanied by members of Fairport Convention, among others, and by John Cale of the Velvet Underground. According to arranger Robert Kirby, he wanted arrangements reminiscent of the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds. The album had been planned before November 1970, but was shelved because Drake was dissatisfied with the sleeve. On his next record, Pink Moon, he played entirely alone.
The first reviews were mostly positive and praised above all Kirby's arrangements. One critic found the ten songs rather too similar to one another. Later Mojo called the album the most polished of his work. Songs such as Fly and One of These Things First returned in films.
