The Tender Touch

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Tender Touch is Nelson Riddle's second studio album, released in 1956. It followed the first album by his orchestra from the year before, a collection of pop arrangements of tunes from the musical Oklahoma! The sleeve note promises the most romantic love songs, melodies as soft as a caress. Capitol Records released the album in December 1956, at the same time as the compilation This Is Sinatra! It was a busy year for the arranger: he wrote the music for the film Johnny Concho, worked on Nat King Cole's last instrumental album and had topped the charts for four weeks with Lisbon Antigua.

Within a month, Billboard counted The Tender Touch among the ten best instrumental pop records. The British World Record Club later issued it under the title Relax with Nelson Riddle.

Listening

Listening tip. In Love Letters, listen to how the orchestra makes the melody sound like a romantic song.
