Oklahoma!

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Musical

On 31 March 1943 the musical Oklahoma! opened at the St. James Theatre in New York, the first work by composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein. The songs carry the story forward, rather than standing apart from it. The show ran for well over two thousand performances. At the end of 1943 Decca released the songs, sung by the original cast: the first major cast album. Broadway became a supplier of hits.

Listening

Listening tip. Hear how the show begins with a single lone voice singing about a beautiful morning, with no great spectacle.
