Emergence

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album

Emergence was released in September 1971 on RCA Victor, the label that had dropped Neil Sedaka at the end of 1966. It was therefore a short reunion. In some countries the album appeared on Kirshner Records, Don Kirshner's own label. He wrote all the songs together with Howard Greenfield.

The album was not a success in the shops, but it has acquired cult status among fans. Four songs were also released as singles: I'm a Song (Sing Me) with Silent Movies, and Superbird with Rosemary Blue. The album opens with I'm a Song (Sing Me) and closes with a reprise of that song. Of all the records Sedaka made, Emergence is his own favourite.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to I'm a Song (Sing Me) and compare it with the reprise at the end of the album. What has changed in the way the song sounds?
