Love Is the Thing

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Love Is the Thing · In 1956, Cole teamed up with arranger Gordon Jenkins to make the first of four albums that critics count among the best of both musicians. The album was released in 1957 on Capitol Records, with Lee Gillette as producer and Charlie LaVere on piano.

Cole sticks entirely to the role he had been given in the 1950s, that of an outstanding ballad singer. His restrained way of singing suits Jenkins's quiet string arrangements. You can hardly hear the singer's jazz roots in it; it is above all a romantic album. Stardust was released as a single. The album reached number 1 on the Billboard chart and was Cole's first gold album. It remained beloved for years afterwards.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Stardust and notice how calmly the strings carry the tempo, so that Cole's soft voice has all the space it needs.
