Breathe

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Breathe from 1996 was the fourth solo album by Midge Ure, the former frontman of Ultravox. Recording was finished in early 1995, in studios in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dublin and in his own studio in Bath. The producer was Richard Feldman. He had first recorded four tracks with Julian Mendelsohn, but they were later done again. The record label left the album on the shelf for more than a year.

The origin lies in an American tour from 1992 with other songwriters. There he played Vienna on acoustic guitar and noticed that he could also make music without much electronics. Inspired by his Scottish background, he blended uilleann pipes and bodhrán with didgeridoo and Gaelic singing. At first the record sold poorly. Only when Swatch used the title track in a TV commercial did Breathe become a hit in several European countries in 1998, reaching number one in Italy and Austria.

Listening tip. Listen to Live Forever, a song inspired by the book Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice, and consider whether you can hear that atmosphere.
