Coney Island Baby

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Coney Island Baby is Lou Reed's sixth solo album and was released in December 1975 by RCA. Anthony DeCurtis called it perhaps the most romantic album of his career. Many songs were inspired by his girlfriend at the time, Rachel Humphreys. In the title song he mentions her by name, alongside the elementary school P.S. 192 in Brooklyn that he attended himself. The Velvet Underground had already recorded She's My Best Friend in 1969, but it only appeared in 1985.

Reed and Godfrey Diamond produced the album with a clear production and a band that, according to Rolling Stone, was the best since the Velvet Underground, with strong drumming by Michael Suchorsky. He dropped the vocal style of the preceding years for more assured, more expressive singing. The Rough Guide calls it his most pleasant soft rock album, with his best humour on A Gift.
