Over de muur

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Song

In 1984 Over de muur by Klein Orkest became a hit. The singer and lyricist Harrie Jekkers came from cabaret. The song is about East and West Berlin and asks whether life in the West is really so much freer than in the East. That was not an obvious question at the time. Five years later the Wall fell. Here kleinkunst (Dutch cabaret song) and pop come together: a narrative song with a chorus that everyone sings along to.

Listening tip. Hear how Jekkers tells the story, with a comparison between East and West, and a chorus to sing along to.
