Red
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Red is King Crimson's seventh studio album. Island Records released it on 7 October 1974, and in North America it came out on Atlantic. The band produced it themselves. The studio parts were recorded in July and August 1974 at Olympic Studios in Barnes, London. Only "Providence" was recorded live, on 30 June 1974 in Providence, Rhode Island. The core of the band consisted of Robert Fripp, John Wetton and Bill Bruford. Fripp disbanded the group in September 1974, shortly before the release.
The record is prog rock with heavy guitars and bass. In 1974 it made little impact: number 45 in Great Britain, for one week, and number 66 in the United States. Later reviews are very positive, with Pitchfork giving 9.0 out of 10. In 2024 a 50th Anniversary Edition was released with an elemental mix by David Singleton. This track listing comes from that mix and does not include "Providence".
