Zing-Zong
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Zing-Zong, from 1991, is an album by the Congolese singer Kanda Bongo Man, dedicated to two brothers from the soukous band Orchestre Bella Bella, Soki Vangu and Soki Dianzenza. They died within a year of each other. Freres Soki is a tribute to them, and the title track is an adaptation of their hit Houleux Houleux. The singer produced the record himself, sang in Lingala and French and took the album on a tour of North America. Nene Tchakou plays the guitar.
The press was positive but not unanimous. The Washington Post heard a fluid weave of sparkling guitars, light rolling rhythms and soft soul vocals. The Boston Herald noted the added horns on top of the Zairean rumba. Another newspaper found the endlessly repeated beat tiring in the end.
