Home Cookin’
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Home Cookin’ contains recordings from 1958 and 1959 and was released on Blue Note. Jimmy Smith plays organ, with Kenny Burrell on guitar, Donald Bailey on drums and, on a number of tracks, Percy France on tenor saxophone. Alfred Lion was the producer and Rudy Van Gelder the engineer. The programme consists of pieces by Smith himself and of covers of existing songs: See See Rider by Ma Rainey, I Got a Woman by Ray Charles, and Sugar Hill and Come on Baby by Burrell. On the CD reissue, five bonus tracks were added.
The AllMusic reviewer calls it a recommended starting point for anyone not yet familiar with Smith's music and a substantial addition for connoisseurs. According to The Penguin Guide to Jazz the album is fairly formulaic, but Burrell's presence makes it a solid record.
