Bleed American

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Bleed American · After the failure of Clarity, Capitol dropped the band in late 1999. The members took on odd jobs, toured through Europe to raise money and paid for the recording with it. In October and November 2000 they recorded the album in Los Angeles, with Mark Trombino as producer. The sound was more direct and accessible than on Clarity, with simpler chords. During the sessions the band put demos on Napster.

After the attacks of 11 September 2001, the album was temporarily released under the name Jimmy Eat World. The Middle, written in response to an email from a fan who felt not punk enough, reached number one on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and number five on the Hot 100. Critics appreciated the record, and several magazines put it on their year-end lists.

Listening tip. Listen to A Praise Chorus and notice the bridge, in which Davey von Bohlen quotes all kinds of other songs: how many do you recognise?
