The Power and the Glory
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Power and the Glory is a 1983 album by the Jamaican musician Jimmy Cliff. He wrote seven of the tracks and was accompanied by his band Oneness. Earl Chinna Smith played guitar, and Kool & the Gang worked on a few tracks. Reggae Night, co-written by La Toya Jackson, was nominated for a Grammy for best reggae recording. Piece of the Pie and American Dream are protest songs. The first quotes lyrics by Bob Marley from Them Belly Full (But We Hungry).
The reviews were mixed. One newspaper found the smooth production and the beautiful tenor not enough to hold the attention. Another praised the light reggae rhythms with familiar R&B melodies. AllMusic heard a hybrid of reggae and pop, far from the raw battle songs of earlier days.
