Zoolook
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Zoolook was released in November 1984 on Disques Dreyfus. Jean-Michel Jarre drew inspiration from his former teacher Pierre Schaeffer and his musique concrète. He recorded voices and speech in twenty-five languages and, together with Frederick Rousseau, worked on them for three months on the Fairlight CMI, a digital sampler. This approach had already begun on Les Chants Magnétiques and Music for Supermarkets.
Much was recorded in Jarre's own studio in Croissy-sur-Seine. In New York, guest musicians such as Adrian Belew and Marcus Miller played on it. Laurie Anderson sang on Diva in an invented language. The record was more difficult than earlier works and reached only number 47 in the United Kingdom. It did win the Grand Prix du Disque and the prize for best instrumental album at the Victoires de la Musique. Colin Larkin called it a pivotal moment in the history of sampling.
