James Newton Howard & Friends
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
James Newton Howard & Friends · This album came about after a demonstration of the new Yamaha DX7 at the NAMM show in Anaheim in January 1983. Bill Schnee and Doug Sax of Sheffield Lab heard James Newton Howard, David Paich and Steve Porcaro play there and wanted to capture the music on record straight away. Recording was long neglected because of busy schedules. Only on 16 December, shortly before the deadline, did Sheffield get a single weekend.
The album contains almost exclusively electronic sounds. Only the drums of Jeff Porcaro, the percussion of his father Joe Porcaro and a grand piano played by Paich are acoustic. The rest comes from nine layers of Yamaha synthesizers, played live, mixed and recorded on two tracks.
