Trumpet Africaine

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Trumpet Africaine: The New Beat from South Africa is the first studio album by the South African musician Hugh Masekela. It was recorded in New York and released in August 1962 on Mercury Records, when he was still at school. He plays flugelhorn and trumpet and sings. Hugo Montenegro provided the arrangements and conducted.

A reviewer for Dusty Groove observed that the jazz element on the record is strong and that all the musicians play with vitality. This makes the album sound fresh and sets it sharply apart from the rest of the trumpeter's early records. The subtitle shows what it was all about: a new beat from South Africa.
