The Mancini Touch
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Mancini Touch was released in 1960 and shows Henry Mancini above all as an arranger and conductor. He works with an orchestra of some thirty-five players, including jazz soloists such as the drummer Shelly Manne and the vibraphonist Victor Feldman. Dick Peirce produced and Al Schmitt engineered.
The repertoire mixes original work with songs by others, such as Bijou by Ralph Burns and Like Young by Andre Previn. Greg Adams of Allmusic wrote that the soloists occasionally improvise within carefully crafted arrangements. In Bijou he already heard the sound of Baby Elephant Walk and The Pink Panther Theme passing by. Billboard praised the orchestra's sharpness and precision and the excellent stereo sound.
