Tenor Conclave

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Four tenor saxophonists on one record: that is Tenor Conclave. John Coltrane, Hank Mobley, Al Cohn and Zoot Sims recorded the album in 1956 for Prestige Records, which released it in early 1957. Behind them plays a rhythm section with Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Art Taylor on drums.

There are four long pieces on it. The title track and Bob's Boys are by one of the four saxophonists himself, and in addition they play Just You, Just Me and Irving Berlin's How Deep Is the Ocean. That last piece lasts well over fifteen minutes. In 1962 Prestige reissued the record with a different sleeve, on which Coltrane's name stood out more.

Listening tip. Listen to Tenor Conclave and try to hear when one saxophonist takes over the solo from another.
