Everybody Needs Love

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Everybody Needs Love is the third studio album by Gladys Knight & the Pips and their first for Motown's Soul label. The producer Norman Whitfield made most of it. The album contains four singles: Just Walk in My Shoes, their Motown debut in 1966, Take Me in Your Arms and Love Me, Everybody Needs Love and I Heard It Through the Grapevine.

Everybody Needs Love reached number 39 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was their first big hit for the label. I Heard It Through the Grapevine did far better, reaching number two. It then became the best-selling single in Motown's history. Its success was later overshadowed by the version by Marvin Gaye, which appeared a year afterwards on the Tamla label.

Listening

Listening tip. In I Heard It Through the Grapevine, listen to the rhythm and Gladys Knight's vocals, and compare it with the version by Marvin Gaye.
