Dark Horse
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Dark Horse came out in December 1974 on Apple Records, as the successor to Living in the Material World. George Harrison wrote and recorded the album in a turbulent period. His marriage to Pattie Boyd was breaking down, he drank heavily and he directed his energy mainly at his new label Dark Horse Records, with Ravi Shankar and the group Splinter. Many guest musicians played on it, among them Ringo Starr, Billy Preston and Ron Wood.
The songs are about the end of his marriage and about doubt. In So Sad he writes about the break-up, and in Bye Bye Love he rewrote the lyrics of the Everly Brothers. The sound moves towards funk and soul, especially in Māya Love and Far East Man. Ding Dong, Ding Dong and Dark Horse became singles. Most critics were negative at the time, partly because of the controversial tour with Shankar.
